I capture the unspoken — the glances, the silences — drawing from New York's pulse and the richness of global cultures. Every wedding is its own intricate narrative. Rooted in theatre and life's everyday rhythms, I document moments both transient and timeless.

Hey, I'm susan!

Do I need a second photographer at my wedding?

Yes. Almost always.

I want to tell you about the time I got too ambitious near the edge of a pond at a wedding and fell in. All the way in. Completely underwater, camera and all. My second photographer never stopped shooting. The couple has no idea it happened until they read this. That is the whole argument in one story.

(I’m lying.  They knew.  They saw it happen.  I just like to think they didn’t see.  It was SO EMBARRASSING.)

A Note on the Word

You will hear two terms: second shooter and second photographer. I use second photographer. Shooter has become a loaded word in ways that feel out of place at a wedding. It is a small thing, but language matters, and I prefer terminology that fits the occasion. Whatever you call them, the role is the same.

What a Second Photographer Actually Does

Wedding days happen in multiple places at once. While I am with one partner getting ready, your partner is getting ready somewhere else. Without a second photographer, one of those rooms goes undocumented. That is not a minor gap. Getting ready is an hour or more of real moments.

During the ceremony, action and reaction happen simultaneously. You are kissing. Your sister is crying in the front row. Your grandmother is squeezing your father’s hand. I can photograph one of those things. A second photographer covers the rest. The ceremony is the only part of your wedding day that happens exactly once and cannot be recreated. It deserves two sets of eyes.

During portraits and reception, a second photographer means different angles, different moments caught at the same time, more comprehensive coverage of a room that is often very large and very full.

The Other Reason

I am a person. I can get sick. I can have a family emergency. I can, apparently, fall into a pond. A second photographer is not just about coverage. They are a backup. If something happens to me during your wedding day, your wedding day does not stop being documented. That matters to me more than almost anything else about how I run my business.

I have photographed hundreds of weddings. I have never had to leave a wedding entirely. But the plan exists because your wedding photographs should not depend on nothing going wrong in my life on that specific day.

When You Might Not Need One

Very small, very short events. A City Hall elopement with two witnesses and a twenty-minute ceremony. A micro-wedding with eight people in someone’s backyard. When the footprint of the day is small enough that one photographer can genuinely cover everything, a second photographer may not be necessary.

I will tell you honestly whether your day needs one. If it does and you are trying to reduce costs, that is a conversation worth having. A second photographer is not the place I would recommend cutting, but I understand that budgets are real and I would rather help you think through the tradeoffs than have you make a decision without the full picture.

What to Ask Your Photographer About Second Photographers

Is a second photographer included in your package or an add-on? Who specifically will be your second photographer? Is it someone you have worked with before? What happens if the second photographer cannot make it the day of?

A lead photographer who uses the same trusted second photographers consistently is different from one who books whoever is available. The relationship and the working shorthand matter on a wedding day.

Frequently Asked Questions: Second Photographers at Weddings

What is a second photographer at a wedding?

A second photographer works alongside the lead photographer to provide simultaneous coverage of different moments and locations. During getting ready, they cover the partner the lead photographer is not with. During the ceremony, they capture reactions while the lead captures the primary action. They provide a different angle, a different perspective, and a genuine backup presence throughout the day.

Is a second photographer worth it?

For most full wedding days, yes. The moments that happen while the lead photographer is elsewhere are not minor. Getting ready coverage, ceremony reactions, candid reception moments from across the room: all of this requires a second set of eyes. The question is not really whether it is worth it but whether you can afford to go without it.

What is the difference between a second photographer and an assistant?

A second photographer is actively shooting throughout the day and delivering images. An assistant helps with logistics, lighting, and equipment but may not be primarily responsible for coverage. Some photographers work with a second photographer for part of the day and an assistant for other parts. Ask specifically what role the second person plays and what images they are responsible for delivering.

Should both photographers have the same style?

The lead photographer’s style should be consistent throughout the gallery. A good second photographer understands this and shoots in a way that complements rather than conflicts with it. When you see the final gallery, you should not be able to easily tell which photographer took which image.

What if something happens to the lead photographer during the wedding?

This is exactly why a second photographer matters. If I am incapacitated for any reason during your wedding day, my second photographer continues coverage without interruption. The backup plan is not theoretical. It is the reason the role exists.

Do you always work with a second photographer?

For full wedding days, yes. I work with trusted second photographers I know well. If you are booking a shorter or more intimate event, I will tell you honestly whether a second photographer is necessary for your specific day. If you have questions about who I work with or how I structure coverage, reach out here.

The pond, for what it is worth, was fine. The camera was not. The wedding photographs were. That is the point.
