I capture the unspoken — the glances, the silences — drawing from New York's pulse and the richness of global cultures. Every wedding is its own intricate narrative. Rooted in theatre and life's everyday rhythms, I document moments both transient and timeless.

Hey, I'm susan!

Family Photos in Central Park

Central Park is one of my favorite places to photograph families in New York City. 843 acres, a dozen distinct settings, and light that changes completely with every season. Here’s what I know about making the most of it.

Why Choose Central Park for Family Photos?

Central Park is a favorite location for family photo sessions because of its unique mix of natural beauty and urban charm. Families love the park’s diverse scenery, which includes sprawling meadows, wooded paths, charming bridges, and elegant architecture. These features allow for a range of photo styles in a single location, making it easy to create a dynamic portfolio of images.

The park is family-friendly and offers plenty of space for children to play, allowing candid and relaxed moments to unfold naturally. Its seasonal beauty also adds a distinct element to your photos. Central Park offers a perfect setting year-round, whether you’re capturing spring blooms, vibrant summer greenery, autumn leaves, or winter snow.

Best Locations in Central Park for Family Photos

With 843 acres to explore, Central Park has scenic spots ideal for family photos. Here are some of the best locations in the park for your session.

  1. Bow Bridge: One of the most iconic landmarks in Central Park. Its elegant, curved design stretches over the lake, offering stunning views of the city skyline and surrounding trees. This spot is perfect for family portraits with a classic New York backdrop. In the fall, the trees around the bridge burst into brilliant shades of red and orange, creating a stunning seasonal display.  One of the most reliably beautiful portrait locations in the park at any time of year.
  2. Bethesda Terrace and Fountain: Bethesda Terrace and Fountain is another favorite for family photo sessions. The terrace’s intricate stonework, grand staircase, and central fountain provide a formal yet timeless setting. The plaza offers plenty of space for family group shots, while the surrounding architecture adds a sophisticated touch to the photos.
  3. The Mall: The tree-lined promenade creates a dramatic, symmetrical backdrop, especially in autumn when the leaves turn golden. The towering American elm trees form a natural canopy, making this spot ideal for candid and posed family photos. The beauty of the Mall changes with each season, offering a unique atmosphere every time.
  4. Sheep Meadow: For families seeking a more relaxed, playful setting, it’s the perfect location. This wide-open, grassy field allows kids to run and play, creating opportunities for candid, joyful moments. The meadow also offers beautiful views of the city skyline in the background, making it a versatile spot for various photo styles.
  5. Conservatory Garden: For families seeking a more formal, elegant backdrop, It is a peaceful, manicured space within Central Park. The garden’s European-inspired design, fountains, and seasonal flowers create a serene atmosphere. This spot is ideal for more structured portraits and is less crowded than other areas of the park, ensuring a quieter, more intimate experience. Note: you need a permit to shoot in the Conservatory Garden – it’s the only place in the park where you do!

What to Expect During Your Central Park Family Photo Session

A family photo session in Central Park is meant to be fun and natural. The park’s expansive space allows children to explore and play, creating an environment where candid moments can unfold organically. While posed portraits are a part of most sessions, some of the best photos often come from these spontaneous moments.

The best times for photos are typically early morning or late afternoon when the light is soft and golden. These times also tend to be less crowded, giving you and your family more space to enjoy the park’s scenic spots. It’s essential to plan for some walking between locations, so comfortable shoes are a must, especially if you’re moving between different park areas during your session.

How to Prepare

It’s important to plan ahead to ensure a successful family photo session in Central Park. Start by discussing your preferred locations with your photographer. Whether you’re drawn to the architecture of Bethesda Terrace or the open fields of Sheep Meadow, having a plan in place will help you make the most of your session.

Another key factor is wardrobe. Choose outfits that coordinate but also reflect your family’s style. Central Park’s natural setting pairs well with neutral tones, pastels, or even pops of vibrant color. Comfortable shoes are essential, especially for kids, as you’ll likely be walking between different areas.

Finally, be prepared for candid moments. Some of the best family photos come from spontaneous interactions, so don’t worry too much about posing. Let your family explore the park and enjoy the session while your photographer captures those natural moments of joy and connection.
