As soon as you know they are the one.
Not twelve months before the wedding. Not after you have locked in the venue and the caterer and the florist. As soon as you find a photographer whose work makes you feel something, reach out. If they are available and it feels right, book them.

Why So Early?
There is only one of me. I cannot clone myself and photograph two weddings on the same day. Neither can any other photographer you are considering. When your date is gone, it is gone. I have had couples come back to me weeks or months after an initial inquiry and the date was no longer available. That is heartbreaking for everyone involved and entirely avoidable.
Your photographer should be one of the first vendors you book, right after your venue and your planner if you have one. The venue sets the date. The photographer should follow almost immediately.
What If My Wedding Is Soon?
The answer is still the same. As soon as you know. If your wedding is in three months and you just found a photographer you love, do not spend two weeks deciding. Reach out today. The question is never really about how much time is left before the wedding. It is about whether the date is still available.

What You Get By Booking Early
Time. Time to get to know each other before the wedding day. Time to work on your timeline together if you want my help with it. Time to plan and photograph an engagement session, which gives you both a chance to work together before the wedding and gives you images you will actually use. Time to ask questions, change your mind about details, and feel settled rather than rushed going into the day.
The couples who book early tend to arrive at their wedding day relaxed about their photographer. They know me. I know them. That relationship shows up in the work.
What Happens If You Wait
Popular dates go fast. Peak season Saturdays in New York, October weekends, holiday weekends: these fill up twelve to eighteen months out for photographers who limit how many weddings they take. If you wait until six months before a peak date to start your photographer search, you will find that many of the people you want are already booked.
More importantly: you will be making a significant decision under time pressure, which is not how you want to choose someone who will be with you for the entire day of your wedding.

Frequently Asked Questions: Booking a Wedding Photographer
How far in advance do most couples book their wedding photographer?
For peak season dates in New York City, twelve to eighteen months is common. Some couples book two years out. Some book six weeks out because they found the right person and the date happened to be open. The number that actually matters is zero: the number of days you should wait once you know you have found the right photographer.
Should I book my photographer before my venue?
Book your venue first, because the venue sets the date. Then book your photographer almost immediately after. Do not wait until everything else is settled. Photographers who take a limited number of weddings per year fill their calendars quickly, and the good ones are often booked before couples even start looking at florists.
What if I am not sure yet and want to keep looking?
That is reasonable. But if you find someone whose work you love and whose availability matches your date, do not hold that date in your head while you continue searching. Other couples are not waiting. If the photographer is right, book them.

Do wedding photographers hold dates?
Most do not hold dates without a signed contract and a retainer. I do not. It is not fair to other couples who are ready to commit. If you are serious about a date, the way to secure it is to book.
Is it too late to book a photographer if my wedding is in a few months?
Not necessarily. Reach out and ask. Calendars sometimes have openings even close to the date, especially for weekday weddings, off-peak months, or dates that opened up due to cancellations. The only way to know is to ask. Waiting another week to decide does not help.
Do you still have availability?
The best way to find out is to reach out directly with your date. I take a limited number of weddings per year and availability changes. If your date is open and it feels like a good fit, we can talk about next steps.
The right time to book your wedding photographer is as soon as you know they are the right one. Everything else follows from there.
