I capture the unspoken — the glances, the silences — drawing from New York's pulse and the richness of global cultures. Every wedding is its own intricate narrative. Rooted in theatre and life's everyday rhythms, I document moments both transient and timeless.

Hey, I'm susan!

How much does an engagement session in NYC cost?

Engagement session pricing in New York City is all over the place, and that’s not a dodge — it genuinely reflects how different the variables are. A one-hour session in a single location with a photographer who has been doing this for five years is a completely different experience from a two-location, two-hour session with someone who has been doing it for twenty-five years. My sessions start at $1,500 for one hour, which includes all edited digital files delivered in both color and black-and-white. Everything beyond that depends on what you actually need.

What does an engagement session in NYC typically cost?

Engagement session pricing in New York City ranges from a few hundred dollars at the lower end to $3,000 and above for experienced photographers. Most established photographers working at a luxury or editorial level charge between $1,500 and $2,500 for a standard session. What you are paying for at the higher end is not a longer list of deliverables — it is a photographer who knows how to make you look like yourself on camera, who knows exactly where the light is at 5 pm in Central Park in October, and who has shot enough sessions that nothing surprises them.

What is included in an engagement session?

At the base level: the session itself, editing, and digital file delivery. My sessions start at 1 hour and include all edited files, in color and black and white, at full resolution. What changes the price are time and location. If you want to start at the Brooklyn Bridge, move to DUMBO, and end at a rooftop bar, that is a longer session, and the price reflects the additional time. If you want a second photographer, that is an additional cost. Albums and prints are separate from digital delivery.

How long should an engagement session be?

One hour works well for a single location with a relaxed pace. Two hours gives you room to move between two locations and decompress — most people need the first twenty minutes just to stop feeling awkward in front of a camera, and a longer session means you are not rushing through the good part. If you are planning to use the images for save-the-dates or wedding website photos and want a real variety, lean toward two hours.

Does the location affect the cost?

The location itself usually does not — but multiple locations mean more time, and more time means a higher session fee. Some locations in NYC require permits for professional photography, particularly in Central Park for commercial work. I handle permit logistics for my clients. If travel is involved — a destination engagement session or coming to a location significantly outside Manhattan — travel time is factored into the session cost.

When should I book an engagement session in NYC?

As early as possible, if you have a specific date, season, or location in mind. Fall in Central Park books out months in advance. The spring cherry blossom season is similarly competitive. If your timing is flexible, six to eight weeks of lead time is usually sufficient for most sessions. If you are visiting New York City from out of town and have a narrow window, book before you finalize your travel dates.

Is an engagement session worth it?

Yes, for reasons that have nothing to do with the photos. The session itself is practice — you learn how to be in front of a camera together, you get comfortable with how your photographer works, and by the time your wedding day arrives you already know each other. Couples who skip engagement sessions are almost always stiffer in their wedding portraits. The images are a byproduct of something more useful: realizing you are not as awkward as you think you are!!!

What should we wear for an engagement session in NYC?

Clothes you actually wear. Not costumes, not something you bought specifically for the photos and will never put on again. Coordinating colors work better than matching outfits — you want to look like two people who belong together, not two people who got dressed at the same time. Avoid large logos and busy patterns that date quickly. Bring a second outfit if you want variety, particularly if your session is two hours or longer.

Can I do an engagement session if we are already married?

Yes — anniversary sessions, vow renewal portraits, and couples sessions for married clients are all things I shoot. The same principles apply. It is not actually about the engagement.

Engagement session pricing differences at the higher end are not about what is included in the package. They are about being better at the thing. If you are planning a session in New York City and want to talk through what would work for you, I would love to hear from you.
