I have been photographing actors and performers in New York City for over twenty years. Headshots are a significant part of my work, and I take them seriously. A headshot is not just a photograph. It is the first thing a casting director or agent sees before they have any other information about you. It has to do a lot of work in a very small frame.

What makes a great headshot?
The single most important thing in a headshot is that it actually looks like you. Not a retouched, softened, idealized version of you. You. As you look right now, on a good day, when you feel like yourself.
Casting directors and agents will meet you in person. If your headshot does not match who walks through the door, you have already created a problem. The best headshot I can make for you is one that captures your actual personality and energy, not a performance of someone you think they want to see.
The second most important thing is that it captures something specific about you. Not generic. Not the pose everyone uses. Something that makes someone stop scrolling and actually look.

What to wear
Keep it simple. A plain top in a solid color with a clean neckline almost always works better than something complicated. The goal is to have your face fill the frame, not your outfit. Patterns, logos, and busy textures pull attention away from you. Bring a few options, and we will talk through them before we start.

What about hair and makeup?
For most sessions, natural and polished is the goal. You want to look like yourself, put together. If you wear makeup regularly, wear it. If you do not, do not feel pressured to start with headshots. The camera should see your face, not a mask.
If you want to work with a hair and makeup artist for your session, I am glad to recommend people I trust. Just ask.

How does a headshot session work?
We shoot in natural light or with controlled studio light, depending on what works best for you and your look. Most sessions run between one and two hours. We will change looks, try different expressions, and move through enough frames that you have real options to choose from.
I will tell you what is working and what is not. I will not let you walk out with a headshot that does not serve you.
