I capture the unspoken — the glances, the silences — drawing from New York's pulse and the richness of global cultures. Every wedding is its own intricate narrative. Rooted in theatre and life's everyday rhythms, I document moments both transient and timeless.

Hey, I'm susan!

Cap Ferrat Wedding Photographer | French Riviera

I Didn’t Know Light Could Do That

The South of France broke something in my brain, photographically speaking.

I’ve shot in Iceland. I’ve shot in Colorado at altitude. I’ve shot in the Caribbean where you’re fighting the sun all day. None of it prepared me for what happens to the world on the French Riviera in June. It glows from underneath. Everything does. I stood in the gardens of Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild on a June evening and genuinely didn’t know what to do with myself for a moment.

Then I picked up my camera and got to work.

Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild, Cap Ferrat

The venue sits on the Cap Ferrat peninsula between Nice and Monaco, and it’s the kind of place that makes you feel slightly embarrassed about everywhere else you’ve ever shot. Nine themed gardens. The Mediterranean on both sides. A Belle Époque villa that Béatrice de Rothschild built in the early 1900s because she could, and she had taste, and the result is one of the most beautiful places on earth.

The wedding I photographed there was a Jewish ceremony — a chuppah built directly over a pond near a fountain, two people under a canopy with the sea behind them, the sun starting to drop at 9:30pm because late summer on the Riviera gives you a golden hour that just keeps going.

I’ve photographed ceremonies in a lot of places. This one stopped me.

They Actually Built the Reception

Not at a venue. On a beach.

A structure was constructed specifically for this wedding — tables on sand, crystal chandeliers strung above them, a stage that sat half on the beach and half in the water. The band played while waves moved underneath them. Guests walked in through a pathway lined with flames.

I didn’t know people did this. I know it now. I will never forget it.

The Morning After

The bride went into the sea the next morning. Just walked in, still in the afterglow of everything, the Cap Ferrat coast doing what it does. I don’t know exactly what to call that — a post-wedding session, a perfect moment, evidence that some places just make you want to be in them as completely as possible.

That’s the French Riviera. It gets into you.

What Getting Married Here Actually Looks Like

The logistics of a French Riviera wedding are real — you need a local planner who knows the vendors, the venues, the paperwork, and how to literally construct a reception on a beach if that’s what you want. None of this happens without serious infrastructure behind it.

Late summer evenings run until 9:30 or 10pm, which gives you a portrait window most places don’t offer. The food is extraordinary. The flowers are extraordinary. The venues are extraordinary. It’s a lot of extraordinary in one place, and somehow it works.

If you’re considering getting married here — Cap Ferrat, Nice, Antibes, Monaco, anywhere along the Côte d’Azur — I will travel there. I know what I’m walking into now. I will not stand there with my mouth open this time. (Probably.)

Frequently Asked Questions: French Riviera Wedding Photography

Do you travel to the French Riviera for weddings?

Yes — without hesitation. If you’re planning a wedding in Cap Ferrat, Nice, Antibes, Monaco, or anywhere along the Côte d’Azur, I’d love to hear about it.

What is Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild?

A Belle Époque villa on the Cap Ferrat peninsula between Nice and Monaco, with nine themed gardens terraced above the Mediterranean. One of the most beautiful wedding venues in the world, and it photographs exactly as extraordinary as it sounds.

What time of year is best for a French Riviera wedding?

June through September for the warmest weather and the longest evenings. Spring is beautiful and less crowded. July and August are peak tourist season which complicates logistics and vendor availability.

How do you handle legal requirements for getting married in France?

I’m a photographer, not a planner — for a destination wedding of this complexity you need a local French planner. They handle the documentation and vendor relationships. I handle the photographs.

What’s the best thing about shooting on the French Riviera?

Everything glows. The gardens, the stone, the sea. And the evenings go on forever in late summer, which means you have portrait time that most locations simply don’t give you.

Have you shot other destination weddings in Europe?

Yes — Finland is the other one, and I travel internationally for the right work. Full destination portfolio here.

If your wedding is on the French Riviera, I’d love to hear about it.
