Regatta Place sits on Goat Island, a few hundred yards off downtown Newport and connected by a causeway. It’s a working marina, so you’re surrounded by boats and the harbor is right there, and the whole thing feels private in a way waterfront venues usually don’t.
I photographed a wedding here in July 2026. Here’s what I’d want to know if I were planning one.
What is Regatta Place?
Regatta Place is a waterfront wedding venue on Goat Island in Newport, Rhode Island. Ceremonies take place outdoors on the dock, and receptions are held under a cream and white striped tent with chandeliers, opening onto a dockside patio. It’s about a ten minute drive from downtown Newport, three hours from New York City, and ninety minutes from Boston.
Where does the ceremony happen?
Ceremonies are held outside on the dock, with the harbor behind you.
The dock is narrow, and this is the detail worth planning around. At the wedding I photographed, only the maids of honor and best men stood up front, and the rest of the wedding party took their seats after walking. That’s not a problem, but it changes how you build your processional, and it’s worth knowing before you finalize your wedding party.
What does the reception space look like?
The reception is under a permanent-feeling tent with draped ceilings and chandeliers, opening directly onto the patio and the water. You get a defined room without losing the harbor.
You can get ready on site as well, should you so desire, or choose from the many gorgeous hotels or AirBnB’s that Newport has to offer.
What is the light like at Regatta Place?
Better than you’d expect from a tent, and it changes completely over the course of the night.
The dock is the prettiest part. White curtains hang along the tent side facing the water, and they do something genuinely useful — they shade your eyes during an afternoon ceremony while still letting you see the harbor between them. You get the view without squinting into it.
Cocktail hour is outside, and the sun goes down directly over it. In late July that’s around 8:10pm. If you want portraits in that last light, build a gap into the reception rather than assuming it’ll happen on its own. At the wedding I photographed we stepped out for a few minutes between the toasts and the entrées, and it was worth the interruption.
After dark the tent gets better. The chandeliers come up and the whole room goes warm and low, and because the sides are open you get the breeze off the water at the same time. It’s the kind of room that photographs at nine at night the way most rooms only photograph at six.
Can you take wedding photos at the Newport mansions?
Yes, on the grounds, but it’s arranged separately through the Preservation Society of Newport County — not through your venue. The rules shape your entire wedding day timeline, so this is worth understanding early.
It costs $1,000 for one hour. One hour is the maximum, not a starting point.
Sessions are only available between 10am and 4pm. This is the one that catches people. If your ceremony is at 5:30, your mansion photographs have to happen well before it, which means a first look and most of your portraits finished by mid-afternoon.
You must book at least two weeks ahead, and they won’t confirm more than three months out. So this can’t be locked in when you book your venue. Confirmation takes up to five days.
Grounds only. No indoor photography at any of the museum properties.
Which properties are available: The Breakers, Marble House, Green Animals Topiary Garden, The Elms, and Chateau-sur-Mer.
A few other things worth knowing. Parking is tight in summer and they recommend arriving by bus or trolley so you can use the bus lots. No drones. No pets unless they’re service animals. Nothing to eat or drink on the property, and no restrooms available during your session. You can’t shoot on the front steps if you’d block the entrance, because the museums stay open to tour guests while you’re there. And these are working museums, so restoration scaffolding is possible on your date.
Reservations are non-refundable once paid, though they’ll consider a weather refund if you ask within seven days.
How long does it take to get from Marble House to Regatta Place?
About thirty minutes by trolley. A trolley is the right call for a Newport wedding: it keeps the wedding party together, it beats coordinating six cars, and the Preservation Society recommends it anyway because of the parking.
What should you plan for at a Regatta Place wedding?
Parking is at the venue, not at your getting-ready locations. If your suite is elsewhere in Newport or Middletown, you’ll need a plan for moving people.
There’s an in-house day-of coordinator.
The Schooner Aurora is docked nearby and can be added for a rehearsal dinner, welcome party or sunset sail.
Where do guests stay near Regatta Place?
There’s a hotel on the island. Newport Harbor Island Resort, formerly Gurney’s, sits on Goat Island with 257 rooms and suites, and it’s a short walk from the venue. That’s the easy answer for out-of-town guests, and it means your getting-ready location and your reception can be a few minutes apart.
Downtown Newport is a five minute drive or a walk across the causeway, so guests who’d rather be in the middle of things have plenty of options there. Middletown is about ten minutes out and usually cheaper.
Parking at Regatta Place is complimentary, which matters more than it sounds like in a town where summer parking is genuinely difficult.
Where can you host a welcome party or rehearsal dinner near Regatta Place?
Newport is a weekend town and most people coming here aren’t just doing Saturday. Almost everything below is a five to ten minute drive from Goat Island.
Bowen’s Wharf is the obvious cluster. It’s in the middle of the harbor and walking distance to a lot of hotels, with several restaurants used to hosting wedding groups. 22 Bowen’s has a private second floor that holds up to 125 for a station-style welcome party, or a smaller room for around 40. Fluke Wine, Bar & Kitchen takes up to 30 in its main dining rooms and has a third floor bar with sunset views. The Landing sits dockside at the end of the wharf.
The Deck on Waite’s Wharf does rehearsal dinners, welcome parties and brunches with the water right there.
Midtown Oyster Bar on Thames Street has a harbor-facing deck and works well for a less formal night.
Castle Hill Inn is out on Ocean Drive with forty acres on Narragansett Bay. It’s the grand option and it’s a real drive from Goat Island, but people do it.
On the water: the Schooner Aurora is docked steps from Regatta Place and takes up to 68 passengers, so a sunset sail is an actual option for a Friday night rather than a novelty.

Up to 180 seated, or around 200 for a flowing cocktail reception. The wedding I photographed had 145 and the space handled it comfortably, with room to move rather than everyone stuck at their tables.
What does a Regatta Place wedding cost?
The venue publishes a midweek package with Thursdays starting around $15,000, which they advertise as 50 to 75% off weekend rates. Weekend pricing is quoted per person and depends on your menu and guest count, so the venue is the only reliable source. Rhode Island adds 7% state tax and there’s typically an administrative fee on top of the food and beverage minimum, so ask for the all-in number rather than the per-person one.
How far is Regatta Place from New York City?
About three hours by car. Ninety minutes from Boston. T.F. Green Airport is roughly 35 to 40 minutes away.
Can you have the ceremony and reception in the same place?
Yes. Ceremony outdoors on the dock, reception under the tent, cocktail hour on the dockside patio in between.
What happens if it rains?
Ceremonies are top-tented, and the venue can add tented sides for bad weather. You aren’t moving indoors and losing the water.
Is there amplified music allowed at the ceremony?
Not for the ceremony itself. The venue permits non-amplified music only, so think string quartet, harpist, flutist, or acoustic guitar. Worth knowing before you book a ceremony band.
Do we need to rent anything?
No. The venue describes itself as all-inclusive with no rentals needed, and there’s an in-house coordinator.
Is there parking?

One last thing
The wedding I photographed here had no cake. They had a tiramisu tower, an ice cream sandwich cart, and a man walking around making cannoli to order. The sun went down at ten past eight and we stepped out for a few minutes to catch it. It was a good night.
