The first time I photographed a wedding in Newport I understood immediately why couples come here. It is another world. The Gilded Age mansions sit along Bellevue Avenue like something out of a novel, and the water is everywhere, and the light that comes off Narragansett Bay in the evening does something that is genuinely hard to describe until you have seen it. I have been photographing weddings here and I want to keep coming back.

The Venues
Belle Mer
Belle Mer sits directly on Narragansett Bay and offers one of the most extraordinary ceremony backdrops in New England. The Newport Bridge in the distance, the water in every direction, the late afternoon light coming across the bay: it is the kind of setting that rewards a photographer who knows how to use it. I have shot here and the images have a quality that is hard to get anywhere else. The combination of water, sky, and architectural elegance gives you real material to work with from ceremony through to the end of the reception.
The Vanderbilt
A 1909 Beaux Arts mansion in downtown Newport, originally built by Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt, now an Auberge Collection hotel. It is intimate by Newport standards, 33 rooms, and it photographs with the particular warmth that genuine historic buildings have. The garden with its periwinkle hydrangeas and climbing ivy, the conservatory, the rooftop terrace with sweeping city views: each setting within the property has its own distinct quality. For couples who want the mansion experience without the grand scale of the Bellevue Avenue estates, the Vanderbilt is the right answer.

Newport as a Photography Location
Beyond the specific venues, Newport itself is extraordinary to photograph in. The Cliff Walk. The harbor. The mansions along Bellevue Avenue as a backdrop. The streets of the historic district in the golden hour light. Couples who build time into their day for portraits around the city come away with images that capture Newport as a place, not just a venue, and those photographs have a quality that purely indoor or on-property images cannot replicate.
The light here in the late afternoon and evening is genuinely different from New York. The bay creates an openness in the sky and a quality of reflected light that softens everything it touches. September and October are my personal favorite months in Newport. The summer crowds are gone, the light goes golden and warm, and the water is extraordinary.

Getting to Newport
Newport is about three hours from New York City by car, longer on summer weekends when traffic on Route 138 and the bridges can be significant. T.F. Green Airport in Warwick is 28 miles away and about 35 minutes by car. For destination wedding couples flying in, Providence is the practical choice. Newport itself has limited accommodation relative to the demand for summer weddings, so booking rooms early is important.

Frequently Asked Questions: Newport Wedding Photography
Do you photograph weddings in Newport?
Yes. Newport is one of my favorite places to work. The venues, the light, the setting on Narragansett Bay: it produces photographs that have a quality distinct from anything I shoot in New York or Philadelphia.
What are the best wedding venues in Newport?
Belle Mer for waterfront ceremony settings with the Newport Bridge behind you. The Vanderbilt for Gilded Age mansion intimacy with gardens and a rooftop terrace. Newport also has a broader venue landscape including The Chanler, Ocean House in Watch Hill nearby, and private estate rentals throughout Aquidneck Island.
Is Newport good for destination weddings?
Excellent. The combination of historic architecture, waterfront settings, and New England coastal atmosphere gives Newport a visual character that is genuinely distinctive. It is close enough to New York and Boston to be accessible for guests but feels completely removed from both. For couples who want something that feels like a real destination without international travel, Newport delivers.
What time of year is best for a Newport wedding?
Late September and October are extraordinary. The summer crowds are gone, the light is warm and golden, and the water takes on a particular quality in the fall that photographs beautifully. June is popular and lovely but books fast. July and August are peak season with peak logistics. Winter in Newport has a dramatic quality that some couples love.
How far is Newport from New York City?
About three hours by car under normal conditions, longer on summer Friday afternoons when traffic heading to Rhode Island and Cape Cod can be significant. T.F. Green Airport in Warwick is the closest major airport, about 35 minutes from Newport.
