On a sweetly sunny spring day, this remarkable duo had the most utterly lovely Nestldown wedding. This day was a destination wedding photographer‘s dream, from getting ready at the Hotel Los Gatos to the beautiful ceremony at the base of the redwoods.

The Venue
Nestldown sits in the Santa Cruz Mountains above Los Gatos, California — about an hour south of San Francisco, deep enough into the redwoods that the rest of the world genuinely disappears. I shot my first wedding there in May 2024 and I’ve been thinking about it ever since.
The property is large and spread across multiple distinct spaces — a redwood grove for ceremonies, Apple Knoll for cocktail hour, a main lawn for dinner, and a restored barn for the reception. Each space is beautiful on its own. Together, with the transitions between them, they create a wedding day that has a real sense of movement and progression. You’re not stuck in one room. You’re moving through a landscape.
That movement is worth planning for. The spaces are connected by pathways, steps, and a little train that shuttles guests between locations. It’s charming — genuinely part of the Nestldown experience — but it matters for your timeline. Build in transition time. And if any of your guests have mobility limitations, talk to the venue team early. They’re experienced with this and can help with logistics before the day arrives.

The Light
The light at Nestldown is what I think about most. Every space is set against dark backdrops of redwoods — that deep, shadowed green that makes anything in the light pop in a way that’s almost cinematic. The filtered canopy light in the redwood grove is unlike anything I work with in New York. Apple Knoll catches the afternoon sky. The barn at night has its own warm glow. From first look to last dance, the light was doing something beautiful at every single location.
For photographers who love working with natural light against dark backdrops — and I’m one of them — this venue is extraordinary.

The Spaces
The Redwood Grove
Where ceremonies happen. You’re surrounded by ancient trees, standing in filtered green light, with the forest as your backdrop. It’s quiet in a way that feels sacred without being formal.
Apple Knoll
The cocktail hour space — an actual knoll with open sky, views, and room to breathe after the ceremony. The late afternoon light here is extraordinary.

The Main Lawn
Hosts dinner under the trees. Long tables, open air, the mountains around you.
The Barn
The reception space — a restored structure with warmth and character. When the dancing starts and the lights come up, it has exactly the energy a barn reception should have.

What to Know
Nestldown is a full buyout venue — your wedding is the only event on the property that day. That exclusivity shows in how the staff operates. Plan your timeline carefully with the venue team. The transitions between spaces add to the experience but they need time built in. Your photographer should do a walkthrough before the day if possible — or at minimum, study the timeline carefully.
If you’re flying in vendors from outside the Bay Area, note that there are specific load-in and load-out windows and a hard end time. Plan accordingly. More at nestldown.com.

Frequently Asked Questions: Nestldown Weddings
Where is Nestldown located?
In the Santa Cruz Mountains above Los Gatos, California — about an hour south of San Francisco. The address and driving directions are provided by the venue upon booking. It is not easy to find without them.
How many guests can Nestldown accommodate?
The venue has a base capacity of 150 and a maximum of 200 guests. It operates as a full buyout — your wedding is the only event on the property that day.
What are the different event spaces at Nestldown?
The Redwood Grove for the ceremony. Apple Knoll for cocktail hour. The Main Lawn for dinner. The Barn for the reception. Each space has a completely different character and all of them are set against the backdrop of the surrounding redwood forest.
How do guests move between spaces at Nestldown?
On foot along pathways and steps, or via a small train that shuttles guests between locations. The transitions are part of the Nestldown experience — charming and memorable. But they take time. Build generous transitions into your timeline and confirm with the venue team what’s realistic for your guest count.

Are there accessibility considerations at Nestldown?
Yes — the property involves walking, multiple levels, and steps between spaces. If any of your guests have mobility limitations, contact the venue team early in your planning process. They have experience accommodating guests with accessibility needs and can help you plan accordingly. ADA cars are available on-site.
What is the light like at Nestldown for photography?
Extraordinary. Every space is set against dark redwood backdrops — that deep, shadowed green that makes subjects in the light stand out in a genuinely cinematic way. The filtered canopy light in the redwood grove is unlike any light I work with on the East Coast. Apple Knoll catches the afternoon sky beautifully. The barn at night has warm, intimate light. It’s a photographer’s venue.
What time of year is best for a Nestldown wedding?
Late spring through early fall — the Santa Cruz Mountains are at their most beautiful from April through October. Summer evenings are warm and long. Note that the venue has a specific sunset and civil twilight schedule that affects outdoor dinner timing — plan your timeline with this in mind.

Do you need to hire a coordinator for a Nestldown wedding?
The venue works with a Spaces & Events Manager who is deeply familiar with the property and timeline. A separate wedding coordinator who knows the Bay Area vendor landscape is strongly recommended, especially if you’re planning from out of the area.
Do you travel to Nestldown for weddings?
Yes — I shot my first Nestldown wedding in May 2024 and it’s a venue I’d return to without hesitation. If your wedding is at Nestldown, I’d love to hear about it.
