I capture the unspoken — the glances, the silences — drawing from New York's pulse and the richness of global cultures. Every wedding is its own intricate narrative. Rooted in theatre and life's everyday rhythms, I document moments both transient and timeless.

Oheka Castle Wedding Guide

I’ve been shooting at Oheka Castle since I moved to New York. It’s one of my favorite venues anywhere — not just on Long Island. The grandeur is real, the history is real, and every time I drive up that approach I still feel it.

About Oheka Castle

Oheka Castle, a magnificent French-style chateau on Long Island, was built a century ago by financier and philanthropist Otto Hermann Kahn. Costing an estimated $11 million at the time, it is the second-largest private residence ever built in America. Kahn used this 109,000-square-foot, 127-room estate as a summer home during the 1920s, hosting lavish parties for royalty, heads of state, and Hollywood stars.

After Kahn’s death in 1934, the estate changed hands several times, serving diverse purposes, including as a retreat and a training school. The Eastern Military Academy occupied it in 1948, leading to significant alterations and damage. Left abandoned for years, it suffered from vandalism and decay until 1984, when developer Gary Melius purchased and began restoring Oheka Castle, investing $40 million to return it to its original grandeur. Today, Oheka is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is renowned as a prestigious wedding venue and a backdrop for films and TV series

A 127-room French-style chateau built in 1919 by financier Otto Hermann Kahn — the second-largest private residence ever built in America at 109,000 square feet. It’s listed on the National Register of Historic Places and is one of the most historically significant and visually extraordinary wedding venues in the entire New York area.

Is Oheka Castle the inspiration for Gatsby’s mansion?

Yes — Oheka Castle is widely cited as one of the inspirations for Jay Gatsby’s mansion in F. Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby. It also appeared in Citizen Kane, served as a filming location for Succession and Royal Pains, and appeared in Taylor Swift’s Blank Space music video. It’s a venue with genuine cultural history — couples who choose it are getting married somewhere that has been part of American storytelling for over a century.

How many guests can Oheka Castle accommodate?

The Grand Ballroom holds up to 450 guests for a cocktail setting. The Terrace Room can accommodate up to 700 for a cocktail reception. The Formal Dining Room holds up to 200. The outdoor spaces — Upper Lawn, Formal Gardens, Great Lawn — accommodate large ceremonies and open-air receptions. Oheka handles both intimate and grand-scale celebrations.

What are the event spaces at Oheka Castle?

The Grand Ballroom is the centerpiece — hardwood floors, high ceilings, classic luxury. The Formal Dining Room is more intimate and works beautifully for rehearsal dinners. The Terrace Room overlooks the formal gardens. The Upper Lawn and Formal Gardens are spectacular for outdoor ceremonies with the castle as a backdrop. The Great Lawn handles large open-air events. Each space has a completely different character and all of them photograph extraordinarily well.

What is the best portrait location at Oheka Castle?

The grand staircase inside for dramatic portraits — one of the most photographed staircases at any wedding venue on Long Island. The formal gardens for outdoor portraits with the chateau in the background. The estate grounds at golden hour when the light hits the castle facade. And the interior hallways and rooms, which have a warmth and grandeur that produces images with genuine depth.

What is the light like at Oheka Castle?

The interior spaces have tall windows and warm ambient light that photographs beautifully throughout the day. The exterior at golden hour is extraordinary. The scale of the grounds means you always have options: shaded garden portraits, open lawn images with the castle behind you, interior shots with window light. It’s a venue that gives a photographer variety without requiring you to leave the property.

How far in advance should you book Oheka Castle?

Oheka is one of the most sought-after wedding venues on Long Island. Popular dates book 12 to 18 months in advance, sometimes further. If you have a specific date in mind, reach out as soon as possible. Fall weekends especially fill up fast.

What time of year is best for an Oheka Castle wedding?

Fall is extraordinary. The formal gardens turn golden, the light on the chateau facade is warm and dramatic, and October weddings at Oheka consistently produce some of the most beautiful images I’ve made at any Long Island venue. Spring is lush and romantic. Summer is full and beautiful but warm. Winter weddings at Oheka have a particular magic — the grandeur of the interior spaces becomes everything, and the estate in winter light is cinematic.

Do you photograph weddings at Oheka Castle regularly?

Oheka has been one of my favorite venues since I moved to New York. I’ve shot there many times across many years and I know exactly how to work the light, the spaces, and the grounds. If your wedding is at Oheka Castle, I’d love to hear about it. And for more on what I do across Long Island venues, my Long Island wedding venues guide covers the broader landscape.

What makes Oheka Castle different from other Long Island wedding venues?

The history. The scale. The genuine grandeur that isn’t manufactured or themed — it’s the real thing. Most Long Island venues are beautiful. Oheka is extraordinary. A couple on that staircase, the formal gardens at dusk, the Grand Ballroom lit for a reception — these images look like nothing else in the area. Couples who get married at Oheka usually knew from the moment they walked in. That clarity shows up in the photographs.
