Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, New York is a gothic dream. Pointed arches, vaulted ceilings, 67 acres of park overlooking the Hudson River, and a history that runs from Civil War-era New York through the Gilded Age. I’ve photographed here and it is one of the most extraordinary architectural backdrops of any wedding venue in the Hudson Valley. More at lyndhurst.org.
About Lyndhurst Mansion
Originally designed in 1838 by architect Alexander Jackson Davis for former New York City mayor William Paulding Jr., Lyndhurst is one of the finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture in the United States. The mansion was expanded in 1864 by merchant George Merritt — who added the characteristic tower, bowling alley, and observatory — and later purchased by railroad tycoon Jay Gould in 1880, who added the rose gardens and greenhouse complex. Jay Gould’s daughter Anna donated the estate to the National Trust for Historic Preservation in 1961. It operates as both a museum and one of the most sought-after wedding venues in the Hudson Valley. You may recognize the interior rooms from HBO’s The Gilded Age.
The Event Spaces
The Great Lawn
The primary outdoor ceremony space — the mansion’s Gothic Revival facade as the backdrop, 67 acres of park stretching out around you, the Hudson River visible in the distance. There is no more dramatic outdoor ceremony setting in the Hudson Valley.
The Rose Garden
An intimate outdoor ceremony option for smaller gatherings. Jay Gould’s original rose gardens, beautifully maintained, with the mansion’s towers visible above the plantings.
The Carriage House Pavilion
The primary reception space — elegant, versatile, accommodates larger guest counts. The architectural character of the historic carriage house with modern event amenities.
The Mansion Interior
Access to the mansion interior for portraits is reserved for the couple only — not the full wedding party. The Grand Picture Gallery, Drawing Room, and Library are extraordinary portrait spaces. Gothic arched windows, vaulted ceilings, intricate decorative elements. A privilege to photograph in.
Why I Love Shooting Here
Lyndhurst is one of those venues where the architecture does things for a photograph that no lighting setup can replicate. The pointed arches, the towers, the Gothic detailing — it’s cinematic in a way that reads immediately in images. And then you step outside and there are 67 acres of Hudson River estate with that specific quality of Hudson Valley light in the afternoon. It’s extraordinary from every angle.
If your wedding is at Lyndhurst, I’d love to hear about it.
