I capture the unspoken — the glances, the silences — drawing from New York's pulse and the richness of global cultures. Every wedding is its own intricate narrative. Rooted in theatre and life's everyday rhythms, I document moments both transient and timeless.

Hey, I'm susan!

Philadelphia Wedding Venues

I’ve been shooting weddings in Philadelphia for over fifteen years. I know this city the way you know a place that’s been woven into your life for a long time — the light on Broad Street in October, the way the Schuylkill looks at golden hour from the Water Works terrace, what it feels like to shoot portraits outside City Hall in a driving snowstorm while the couple shrugs and says let’s go anyway.

Philadelphia has more than 90 wedding venues across the city and the surrounding region. Some I have photographed many times. Some I have shot once. Some I have never been to, but couples ask about. This guide is honest about which is which.

The venues below — the ones I know best — get the full treatment. The directory at the bottom has everything else worth knowing.

A bride in a white dress and veil strikes a pose on a city street with Philadelphia's City Hall in the background, depicted in both color and black and white.

The Philadelphia venues I know best

The Grand Belle at the Bellevue

Location: 200 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA

200 South Broad Street, and one of the most glamorous rooms in the entire mid-Atlantic. The Bellevue first opened in 1904 — Gilded Age grandeur, crystal chandeliers, marble floors, ornate details that photograph beautifully in almost any light. Cescaphe recently took over the space and renovated it, adding new hardwood floors and modern lighting while keeping everything that makes it extraordinary. It’s a venue that knows what it is and leans into it completely.

The Ritz Carlton Philadelphia

Location: Broad and Chestnut, Philadelphia, PA

The domed ceiling. That’s the thing. The Ritz Carlton Philadelphia has a domed ceiling with architectural detailing that photographers dream about, and the ballroom light plays off the marble columns in a way that makes every portrait feel like it was lit specifically for you. I spent an entire winter wedding day inside here once — the weather made outdoor portraits nearly impossible — and I wasn’t even slightly disappointed.

The Crystal Tea Room

Location: Wanamaker Building, 100 Penn Square East, 9th floor, Philadelphia, PA

Inside the historic Wanamaker Building, and genuinely unlike anything else in the city. Soaring ceilings, an atrium with a fountain, a ballroom that transports you to early 20th-century Philadelphia. The light in the atrium is soft and green and extraordinary. The largest banquet hall in Philadelphia, up to 1,200 guests, operated by Finley Catering since 1976.

Four Seasons Philadelphia at Comcast Center

Location: Comcast Technology Center, Philadelphia, PA

The newest of the grand venues and the tallest building in the city. Four Seasons Philadelphia has floor-to-ceiling windows on the 59th floor with views of the Philadelphia skyline in every direction. The getting-ready suites are extraordinary for prep photography — the window light at that elevation is clean and directional in a way that ground-floor hotel rooms simply can’t match.

Water Works

Location: Behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art along the Schuylkill River, Philadelphia, PA

Nestled behind the Philadelphia Museum of Art along the Schuylkill River, with views of Boathouse Row that look like a painting. This is one of my favorite venues in the entire city — the combination of historic architecture, water, and that particular late afternoon light off the river is something I never get tired of.

The Union League of Philadelphia

Location: 140 South Broad Street, Philadelphia, PA

A members-only club founded in 1862 on Broad Street, and one of the most distinctive historic venues in Philadelphia. Rich wood paneling, opulent chandeliers, beautifully preserved Victorian interiors. The Union League hosts weddings in spaces that range from grand ballrooms to intimate dining rooms, and the building itself is a genuine piece of Philadelphia history.

The Downtown Club

Location: 600 Chestnut Street, Philadelphia, PA

On Chestnut Street, directly across from the Renaissance Philadelphia Downtown Hotel and steps from the Merchant’s Exchange and Independence Hall. A Cescaphe property — full-service from ceremony through reception — with a location that puts you in the middle of historic Philadelphia for portraits. I photographed a wedding here recently and the proximity to City Hall, Merchant’s Exchange, and Old City made the day extraordinary.

The Powel House

Location: 244 South 3rd Street, Society Hill, Philadelphia, PA

A Georgian townhouse built in 1765 in Society Hill, where George Washington, Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Lafayette all dined. The second-floor ballroom has original plasterwork, the walled garden has a violet wisteria trellis, and the parlor rooms hold period furnishings and original details. Maximum 100 guests. One of the most intimate and historically extraordinary small wedding venues in Philadelphia. I love photographing here.

The Please Touch Museum

Location: 4231 Avenue of the Republic, Fairmount Park, Philadelphia, PA

A Beaux-Arts National Historic Landmark in Fairmount Park, built for the 1876 Centennial Exhibition. Hamilton Hall has 60-foot ceilings and a four-story Statue of Liberty made entirely of children’s toys. The Carousel House has a fully operational 1908 antique carousel. By day it is a children’s museum. For weddings, it transforms into one of the most dramatically scaled and genuinely unusual venues in Philadelphia.

Union Trust

Location: Philadelphia, PA

A former bank building turned wedding venue with the kind of soaring architectural drama that historic Philadelphia does better than almost anywhere else. The main banking floor hosts ceremonies and receptions in a space that feels theatrical without trying — high ceilings, marble, light, scale.

Read more in my Union Trust wedding post.

The Loews Hotel Philadelphia

Location: 1200 Market Street, Philadelphia, PA

Housed in the historic PSFS building — America’s first skyscraper — the Loews Philadelphia combines 1930s Art Deco grandeur with modern luxury. The ballroom windows give you sweeping views of the Philadelphia skyline, and City Hall is steps away for portraits.

A wedding couple embracing in front of a city skyline at night at Loews Hotel Philly.

Portico at Awbury Arboretum

Location: 1 Awbury Road, Philadelphia, PA

A hidden gem in Germantown that most people outside Philadelphia have never heard of. Awbury Arboretum has a covered wraparound porch, a tent set on flagstone paths through 55 acres of historic arboretum, the kind of intimate and atmospheric setting that larger venues simply can’t manufacture. I shot a rainy fall wedding here and the images are some of my favorites from Philadelphia.

Fairmount Park Horticultural Center

Location: 100 N Horticultural Drive, Philadelphia, PA

One of Philadelphia’s most beautiful outdoor venues — 2,000 acres of parkland with the Horticultural Center at its heart. The grounds change with every season and the natural light here is extraordinary year-round. For couples who want landscape and architecture in equal measure, this is a strong choice.

The Lake House Inn

Location: 1100 Old Bethlehem Road, Perkasie, PA

About an hour outside Philadelphia on the shores of Lake Nockamixon, surrounded by nearly 6,000 acres of state parkland. A 19th-century general store turned boutique inn with fourteen rooms, a stone wine cellar, and lake-facing reception spaces. A destination wedding without the airfare.

Other Philadelphia venues to consider

Philadelphia and the surrounding region have a remarkable range of additional wedding venues. The list below is honest — I haven’t shot at all of these, but I know them the way any photographer working this market for fifteen years does. If you’re considering one and want my take, ask.

The Kimmel Center for the Performing Arts

Location: 300 S Broad St, Philadelphia, PA

The Avenue of the Arts venue with the glass dome — Commonwealth Plaza — and Verizon Hall’s wood interior. Multiple ceremony and reception spaces inside, all of them dramatic. Right for couples who love modern architecture and want a venue that feels like an event before anyone walks in.

The Barnes Foundation

Location: 2025 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA

Hard to overstate how good the Barnes is. The Impressionist and Post-Impressionist collection — Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse — is hung exactly the way Albert Barnes hung it a century ago. For weddings, the Garden Restaurant and the Annenberg Court both work. A wedding at the Barnes is about art first.

Philadelphia Museum of Art

Location: 2600 Benjamin Franklin Parkway, Philadelphia, PA

The Rocky Steps building. Greek temple architecture, the full sweep of the Parkway leading up to it, and one of the finest art collections in the country inside. They do weddings in the Great Stair Hall and a few other interior spaces. Cinematic in the best way.

Franklin Institute Science Museum

Location: 222 N 20th St, Philadelphia, PA

If you’ve been to Philadelphia, you’ve probably been here. The marble Benjamin Franklin statue in the rotunda is the centerpiece. The Mandell Center and the rotunda both host weddings. Right for couples who want something genuinely unusual.

Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts (PAFA)

Location: 118-128 N Broad St, Philadelphia, PA

The oldest art school and museum in the country. The Historic Landmark Building has a Gothic interior with grand galleries; the Hamilton Building next door is modern. A wedding here can use both buildings, which is a rare and dramatic option in the city.

A wedding reception at the Ritz Carlton Philadelphia set up with elegant candles and sparkling chandeliers.

One North Broad St.

Location: 1 N Broad St, Philadelphia, PA

The Masonic Temple, directly across from City Hall. Massive, ornate, almost theatrical inside — every room done in a different historical style (Egyptian, Norman, Renaissance, Gothic). Few venues in Philadelphia have this kind of architectural ambition.

The Racquet Club of Philadelphia

Location: 215 S 16th St, Philadelphia, PA

A private social club with the wood-paneled, old-world clubhouse aesthetic. Limited public availability for weddings. Right for couples who want a clubby, intimate space that feels like nowhere else.

The Free Library of Philadelphia

Location: 1901 Vine St, Philadelphia, PA

On the Parkway, with a Beaux-Arts interior and a rooftop terrace that looks across the city. The Skyline Room is the main wedding space. A library wedding is a particular taste — for couples who want it, this is the one.

Philadelphia’s Magic Gardens

Half a block of mosaic on South Street, made by Isaiah Zagar over decades. Tile, glass bottles, found objects, mirrors, sculptures. Smaller weddings only. There is genuinely nowhere else like this in the country.

America’s first zoo, set in Fairmount Park. The Peacock Pavilion and the Penn House are the main wedding spaces. Right for couples who want their guests to walk past flamingos on the way to cocktail hour.

Race Street Pier

A pier on the Delaware River right next to the Benjamin Franklin Bridge. Outdoor only, ceremony-focused. For a couple who wants the bridge in their photographs and doesn’t mind weather risk.

The Rail Park

Location: 1300 Noble St, Philadelphia, PA

Philadelphia’s version of the High Line — an elevated former rail line turned public park. Smaller and newer than New York’s, more intimate. Outdoor ceremony space with a particular industrial-meets-green character.

Academy of Natural Sciences

Location: 1900 Benjamin Franklin Pkwy, Philadelphia, PA

The dinosaur skeletons, the dioramas, the butterfly garden. Weddings happen among the exhibits. For couples who think a T. rex behind the head table is a feature, not a bug.

The Bok Building

Location: 1901 S 9th St, Philadelphia, PA

A former South Philadelphia vocational school turned creative space. The rooftop bar has one of the best skyline views in the city. The lower floors have artist studios and event spaces. Industrial, current, very Philadelphia.

Best Wedding Photography in Philadelphia

Frequently Asked Questions: Philadelphia Wedding Venues

What are the best wedding venues in Philadelphia?

The ones I return to most: the Grand Belle at the Bellevue, the Ritz Carlton, the Crystal Tea Room, Four Seasons Philadelphia, and Water Works. Each has a completely different character. The Bellevue is Gilded Age glamour. The Crystal Tea Room is historic grandeur. Four Seasons is modern skyline luxury. Water Works is romantic and waterfront. The Ritz-Carlton is the domed ballroom of every photographer’s dreams.

What is the most popular wedding venue in Philadelphia?

It depends on what kind of wedding you’re planning. For grand historic ballrooms, the Grand Belle and the Crystal Tea Room are at the top. If you want full-service Cescaphe weddings, Water Works, Tendenza, and the Downtown Club are the most-booked. For smaller and more intimate, the Powel House. Philadelphia has more than 90 wedding venues — popularity depends on guest count, style, and budget.

What’s the best time of year for a Philadelphia wedding?

Fall is my favorite — October especially. The light goes warm and golden, the city looks extraordinary, and the weather is usually cooperative. Spring is beautiful but unpredictable. Summer works with the right venue. Winter in Philadelphia has a dramatic quality — I once shot portraits on Broad Street in a full snowstorm and they’re some of my favorite images from the city.

Does Philadelphia have outdoor wedding venues?

Yes. Fairmount Park’s Horticultural Center, Bartram’s Garden, Morris Arboretum, and Tyler Arboretum all offer outdoor ceremony and reception options. Awbury Arboretum in Germantown is a hidden gem with a tent setup on flagstone paths through 55 acres. For estate weddings outside the city, the Lake House Inn in Bucks County and HollyHedge Estate are extraordinary.

What are the best Philadelphia wedding venues for photography?

Different venues photograph differently. The Bellevue and the Ritz-Carlton for ballroom drama. Four Seasons for floor-to-ceiling skyline light. Water Works for the waterfront and Boathouse Row. The Crystal Tea Room for soft green atrium light. The Powel House for intimate Georgian historical detail. Please Touch Museum for genuinely surreal scale. The right venue for your photography depends on the kind of images you want and the light you’ll have on your wedding day.

How far is Philadelphia from New York City?

About two hours by car or Amtrak. I make the trip regularly, and it’s genuinely easy. If you’re getting married in Philadelphia and looking for a New York-based photographer who knows your city, that’s exactly what I am.

Do you photograph weddings in Philadelphia regularly?

Yes. Philadelphia is one of my most-shot cities outside New York. If your wedding is here — at any of these venues or somewhere else entirely — I’d love to hear about it.
