I capture the unspoken — the glances, the silences — drawing from New York's pulse and the richness of global cultures. Every wedding is its own intricate narrative. Rooted in theatre and life's everyday rhythms, I document moments both transient and timeless.

Hey, I'm susan!

Hudson Valley Wedding Photographer

If I Ever Leave New York City, I’m Moving Here

There’s a moment when you’re driving north out of the city where something changes. You cross into the Hudson Valley and you just — know. The air is different. The scale is different. The light is different. Something in your shoulders drops and you think oh, this is what it’s supposed to feel like.

I’ve been shooting weddings in the Hudson Valley for years and I still get that feeling every single time I drive up. I’d build a house here if I could. I might still.

Why the Hudson Valley Photographs the Way It Does

The Hudson Valley is one of the most naturally photogenic regions in the northeast, and it’s not an accident. The landscape is doing real work — the Hudson River, the Catskill Mountains, the rolling farmland, the way the light falls in October across a hillside vineyard. It’s a place that was made to be photographed. Artists figured this out in the 1800s. Couples figuring it out now are not wrong.

Every season here is different. Spring brings soft green light and cherry blossoms. Summer is warm and long. Fall is extraordinary — the foliage, the golden light, the particular quality of an October afternoon in this region that I would drive four hours for. Winter has a quiet drama that photographs beautifully when you lean into it.

The Hudson Valley Venues I Know Best

Hudson Valley Weddings at The Hill

In Hudson, NY, and one of my absolute favorites. A 19th-century farmstead with a historic Palladian Barn, horse pastures, woodlands, and views that go on forever. The Hill has been hosting significant moments since 1801 and it shows — there’s a depth to this place that newer venues simply can’t manufacture. I’ve written a full guide to The Hill if you want to go deep on it.

Liberty View Farm

A certified organic farm in Highland with panoramic Hudson Valley views, a greenhouse, ivy-covered barn, and floral backgrounds that make portraits almost effortless. It’s the kind of venue that rewards a photographer who slows down and pays attention — there are beautiful images hiding in every corner of this property. Full details in my Liberty View Farm wedding post.

Meadow Ridge on the Hudson

Nearly 100 acres in Coxsackie with panoramic views of the Berkshire and Catskill mountain ranges, a restored English-Dutch dairy barn that holds up to 300 guests, and red maple allées that turn extraordinary in fall. Meadow Ridge is one of the most visually expansive venues in the region — the kind of place where the landscape does significant photographic work on its own.

In the end, being the best wedding photographer in Hudson Valley is not just about producing beautiful pictures. It’s about capturing the essence of your love story, the laughter, the tears, the nerves, and the joy. It’s about capturing your dream day in the Hudson Valley and transforming it into a timeless visual story that you’ll cherish forever. And that is what I, Susan Stripling, strive to achieve with every wedding I photograph.

Basilica Hudson

For couples who want something completely different — industrial, raw, a blank canvas in the city of Hudson itself. Basilica Hudson is a beautiful combination of metal beams, exposed brick, and massive windows with Catskill Mountain views from a Hudson Riverfront location. It’s nothing like the pastoral Hudson Valley venues and it’s exactly right for certain couples.

Sleepy Hollow Country Club

Victorian manor designed by McKim, Mead & White, sitting on land with terraces overlooking the Hudson. The Grand Ballroom handles large receptions beautifully, and the historical weight of this place — Rockefeller and Vanderbilt connections — shows up in the architecture in a way that photographs with real gravitas.

What the Light Does Here

The Hudson Valley in October is something I would photograph for free. The way the afternoon light comes across the Catskills and lands on the river and the farms below — it’s one of the most beautiful things I see all year. I’ve shot weddings in Iceland, on the French Riviera, in the Florida Keys. The Hudson Valley in fall holds its own against all of it.

Summer evenings here go long and warm. Spring light through the apple orchards is soft and extraordinary. Even winter, when everything is stripped back and quiet, has a photographic quality that rewards couples willing to embrace it.

How Far Is the Hudson Valley from New York City?

Closer than most people think. The southern Hudson Valley — Sleepy Hollow, Tarrytown — is 45 minutes from Manhattan. Hudson proper is about two hours. The Catskills are two to two and a half hours. Close enough for guests to travel easily, far enough to feel genuinely away. Most couples coming from the city take the Metro-North Hudson Line or drive — both are straightforward.

Frequently Asked Questions: Hudson Valley Wedding Photography

Do you photograph weddings throughout the Hudson Valley?

Yes — from Tarrytown in the south all the way up to Hudson and the Catskills. I’ve shot at venues across the region and know the landscape well. If your wedding is anywhere in the Hudson Valley, reach out.

What are the best wedding venues in the Hudson Valley?

The Hill, Liberty View Farm, Meadow Ridge on the Hudson, Basilica Hudson, and Sleepy Hollow Country Club are the ones I return to most. I’ve written individual guides to several — you can find them all in my Hudson Valley venues roundup.

What time of year is best for a Hudson Valley wedding?

Fall. October specifically. The foliage, the light, the temperature — it’s the most photographically extraordinary time of year in this region. Spring is beautiful. Summer is warm and long. Winter has a quiet drama that works beautifully for the right couple.

How far is the Hudson Valley from New York City?

Anywhere from 45 minutes to two and a half hours depending on how far north you’re going. Most major venues are accessible within two hours from Manhattan.

Can we do portraits outside the venue?

Absolutely — and I’d encourage it. The Hudson Valley landscape is one of the great gifts of shooting here. Whether it’s a field, a riverbank, a vineyard row, or a dirt road through the woods, the region offers portrait opportunities that most venues can’t contain within their own grounds.

Do you shoot weddings in the Catskills as well?

Yes — the Catskills are part of the broader Hudson Valley region and I shoot there regularly. If you’re comparing Hudson Valley vs. Catskills venues, my wedding venues near NYC guide covers options across the full region.

What makes Hudson Valley weddings different from NYC weddings?

Scale and landscape. In New York City you’re working with architecture and energy. In the Hudson Valley you have space — actual, physical, breathable space — and nature doing significant photographic work on your behalf. As someone who has shot extensively in Brooklyn and Manhattan, I love both for different reasons. The Hudson Valley is where I go to breathe.

If your wedding is in the Hudson Valley — any venue, any season — I’d love to hear about it.
